Why is acrylic tape applied to yellow metals?

As a polishing company who process brass, aluminium, copper and bronze as well as stainless steel we are often asked why we don’t recommend standard protective tapes as an application on brass and copper.

The adhesive layer on standard, and laser, tapes has a rubber element to it and prolonged expose to the surface of yellow meals means that this can discolour the surface.

We therefore recommend protective tape that has an acrylic adhesive layer which doesn’t do this. Unfortunately, laser cutting through acrylic tape isn’t recommended – it doesn’t have the adhesive strength – and this is something to bear in mind.
