Grained Finishes
Produced via one of our many through feed routes for sheet and plate from 0.5mm to 20mm thick and up to 2 metres wide.
We not only offer standard and recognisable finishes but are happy to work with you to match and develop finishes. For plate thicker than 10mm thick we offer grained finishes via a traditional narrow band route with a max piece weight of two tonnes.
With extensive product lines these finishes are also available on coil, blanks, profiles, flat bar, angle and square / rectangular tube.
Coarse Ground
A coarse abrasive finish with a unidirectional grain often applied as a key for paint or for bonding purposes.
Generally produced with an aluminium oxide abrasive with grits between 60 > 100.
On standard cold rolled sheet a Coarse Ground finish produces a surface roughness of approximately 2.5µm Ra conforming to BS EN 10088-2 2G Finish. Under the old BS 1449 Part 2 specification this was a 3A finish.
We can apply a Coarse Ground finish onto the following products:
Sheet, Plate, Flat & Square bar, Square & Rectangular tube, Blanks, Coil, Lasercut profiles
Please be aware that the above refers to the finish produced on cold rolled sheet. On other products different readings may result depending on the performance of the substrate.
Dull buffed
An abrasive finish with a unidirectional grain generally produced with an aluminium oxide abrasive with an approximate grit of 180. Surface is smoother than Coarse Ground but not as fine as other finishes in our range.
On standard cold rolled sheet a Dull Buffed finish would produce a surface roughness of approximately 1.25µm Ra conforming to the BS EN 10088-2 2J Finish. Under the old BS 1449 Part 2 specification this was a 3B finish.
We can apply a Dull Buffed finish onto the following products:
Sheet, Plate, Flat & Square bar, Square & Rectangular tube, Blanks, Coil, Lasercut profiles
Please be aware that the above refers to the finish produced on cold rolled sheet. On other products different readings may result depending on the performance of the substrate.
Dull Polished
An abrasive finish with a unidirectional grain generally produced with an aluminium oxide abrasive with an approximate grit of 240. Surface is smoother than Dull Buffed but not as fine as other finishes in our range.
On standard cold rolled sheet a Dull Polished finish would produce a surface roughness of approximately 0.6µm Ra conforming to the BS EN 10088-2 2J Finish.
Under the old BS 1449 Part 2 specification this was a No. 4 finish.
We can apply a Dull Polished finish onto the following products:
Sheet, Plate, Flat & Square bar, Square & Rectangular tube, Blanks, Coil, Lasercut profiles
Please be aware that the above refers to the finish produced on cold rolled sheet. On other products different readings may result depending on the performance of the substrate.
240 Silicon
An abrasive finish with a unidirectional grain produced with a silicon carbide abrasive with an approximate grit of 240. Due to the nature of polishing with silicon carbide the finish results in a ‘clean cut’ grain ideally suited to external architectural, pharmaceutical and catering applications. Surface is smoother than a Satin Polished finished but not as fine as a ProLustre Finish.
On standard cold rolled sheet a 240 Silicon finish would produce a surface roughness of approximately 0.3µm Ra conforming to the BS EN 10088-2 2K Finish. Under the old BS 1449 Part 2 specification this was a N0. 5 finish.
We can apply a 240 Silicon finish onto the following products:
Sheet, Plate, Flat & Square bar, Square & Rectangular tube, Blanks, Coil, Lasercut profiles
Please be aware that the above refers to the finish produced on cold rolled sheet. On other products different readings may result depending on the performance of the substrate.
ProLustre
A clean cut abrasive finish with a unidirectional grain. This is a multistage process and the final finish is produced with a silicon carbide abrasive. An incredibly fine finish for applications where the smoothest grained surface is required.
On standard mill produced sheet the surface is approximately 0.25µm Ra conforming to the BS EN 10088-2 2K Finish. Under the old BS 1449 Part 2 specification this was a No 5 finish.
We can apply a ProLustre finish onto Sheet only.
